Couple celebrates 65th Valentine’s Day together

This year Brian and Barbara Bolister are celebrating their 65th Valentine’s Day together.
Barbara, who receives care from CRG Homecare, has been married to Brian for 60 years and to celebrate Valentine’s Day, Mr and Mrs Bolister share their story with us.
“I met Barbara through work. I was working in a shoe shop at the time and she was working as a seamstress next door in a dress shop. We went on our first date to the pictures to watch a French film and I knew then I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her,” Brian said.
Brian and Barbara tied the knot on 12th September 1959 in Hackney, London after he popped the question, on her doorstep before her 10pm curfew.
“I knew Barbara was the one for me, so I asked her father for his permission to marry her. We’d been on a date and I was taking her home when I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me.
“We organised an engagement party at our local Labour Club in Hackney. It was a great night celebrating with family and friends. A year later we married at St John’s Church in Hackney – it was one of the best days of our lives!” Brian explained.
Last year Brian and Barbara celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their family and friends. During the past 60 years Brian and Barbara’s family has continued to grow; they have two daughters, three grandchildren and a great grandchild and they love nothing more than spending time with them. They also loved their holidays and regularly travelled to Spain.
Barbara said: “I think the secret to a happy marriage is laughter. We are always there for each other and have had a lot of great holidays together. We are always laughing – we are very happy.”
15 years ago, the couple retired and moved to Rayleigh, Essex. It was then when Barbara suffered a Brainstem haemorrhage which resulted in mobility issues. Brian supports Barbara with day-to-day tasks, but CRG Homecare’s Care Assistants provide a sitting service two days a week that allows Brian to do his shopping and jobs in town.
One of Barbara’s Care Assistants, Jordhan Goodwin has provided support for the past few years. She said: “When meeting Barbara and Brian I thought straight away, what a lovely couple. They have so much banter with each other but so much love for one another at the same time.
“I was so impressed to hear they’ve been married 60 years. It reminded me of my own Nan and Grandad, who have been married 51 years themselves. They’re lovely people and I enjoy supporting them very much.”
Even after 60 years of marriage Brian still buys Barbara a card and flowers every Valentine’s Day. He said: “It’s tradition that we celebrate Valentine’s Day. I am very lucky that she is my wife, she’s still looks gorgeous!”
