How Care Assistants can manage their mental wellbeing
By Hannah West
Working in care can be a challenging and demanding career. At CRG Homecare we are committed to providing our service users with the highest quality care. To do this, it is essential that our Care Workers look after themselves and maintain good physical and mental wellbeing.
We have put together some self-care tips:
Keeping active is a great way to boost those happy hormones and reduce anxiety. Going out for a walk during your spare time is great for clearing your head and getting some fresh air. It also relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. Even a short burst of 10 minutes brisk walking increases our mental alertness.
Get enough sleep
Lack of sleep can seriously affect your performance at work. Trying to adapt your routine in shift based work is particularly difficult, so it is vital that we get at least 7 hours of sleep per night, giving your body and mind the chance to reset. Try winding down an hour before bed, switch off all televisions and mobile phones and keep yourself in a peaceful environment.
Maintain a healthy diet
During busy and unsociable hours, it is easy to simply forget to eat. Therefore it is vital to fill our body with mind boosting, healthy food to keep our energy levels up during long shifts. Fruits and vegetables will keep you fuller for longer and will prevent you from snacking on sugary and fatty foods. Replace energy drinks for water, which will actually keep you alert for longer.
Do something for yourself every day
Whether it is reading a book or catching up with friends on the phone, it is so important to give yourself time to switch off from work and focus on yourself. If you have a hobby, make time for it as much as you can, so that you can return to work refreshed and focused on your role.
Our workforce is going above and beyond every day to ensure our service users continue to receive the care and support needed during these unprecedented times. Thank you to each and every one of our employees who are working in the community – you’re doing a great job!
